You never know what you’ll find at any store, so honoring a basic curiosity can often save you in ways you would’ve never thought of. In every store, no matter the price points, there is a little to be learned.

I love exploring hidden gems in ethnic-rich areas like Chinatown in New York, Little Armenia in Los Angeles, or Little Havana in Miami. Areas such as these offer a great opportunity for shoppers to bypass one of the importing and markup steps. These shops are importing directly from their home country and not working through an import house. As a result, you can save 50 to 75 percent on cool accessories and clothing.

Every major city has these celebrated enclaves of culture, and the bargains are phenomenal. But you have to be willing to go in and take a look around. Once you’ve dropped by, look at things with a discriminating eye. Key items representing a specific culture can add flavor and unique style to an ensemble, but you never want to look like you are wearing a costume. Skip the warrior headdress, and opt for things like vibrant printed scarves, chunky wood bangles, or full, decorative skirts. One thrifty-chic ethnic piece can speak volumes.
